The Sentinel of Time: Ankara castle and its living streets
Ankara Castle rises above the Anatolian steppe as a living record of the city’s layered past. From ancient fortifications and historic timber houses to artisan workshops and winding cobbled alleys, Burkay Doğan explores a place where centuries of history remain part of everyday life, offering photographers a fascinating dialogue between heritage, texture and contemporary Ankara.
Perched atop a rugged volcanic outcrop overlooking the Anatolian steppe, Ankara Castle stands as the very cradle of the city’s urban memory. While the exact date of its initial construction remains uncertain, archaeological traces date early settlement back to the Hittites. Over subsequent centuries, the citadel was fortified, rebuilt, and shaped by the Galatians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. The walls themselves, often embedded with repurposed Roman spolia, sarcophagus fragments, and classical column capitals, read like a vertical, layered archive of Anatolian civilizations.
Today, the citadel is far more than a monument of medieval defense; it is a living neighborhood where community life has never ceased. Through comprehensive restoration and facade rehabilitation initiatives led by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB), the architectural heritage of the Inner and Outer Citadel has been revived. Hundreds of historic Ankara houses distinguished by their timber frames, mudbrick infill, whitewashed walls, and cantilevered upper floors (cumba) have been meticulously preserved according to their original craft traditions.
These restored residential quarters now anchor the historic and creative core of the capital. Traditional workshops, artisan studios, antique shops, art galleries, and boutique cafes occupy these historical spaces, transforming the winding cobblestone alleys into a vibrant cultural route. Standing along the ramparts reveals an unobstructed 360-degree panorama of modern Ankara below, while the alleys within retain an authentic street life, offering compelling contrasts, rich textures, and timeless frames for photographers and travelers alike.
