OM System’s next Pro Telephoto Zoom: What to expect from the rumoured 70–200mm f/2.8
OM System remains one of the few camera manufacturers that continues to publish a public lens roadmap—something many photographers appreciate for its transparency. The most recent update reveals a new telephoto zoom scheduled for release this year. A small teaser image is included, though no specifications have been confirmed.
That hasn’t stopped speculation. The latest rumours point to a 70–200mm f/2.8 IS PRO, a lens that would sit firmly in the professional tier of the Micro Four Thirds lineup. Until recently, many expected the company to follow the roadmap with a 50–200mm f/2.8 PRO, which would align more closely with the system’s existing focal lengths.
However, a source speaking to 43rumors suggests OM System has opted for a 70–200mm instead. This has led to discussions about whether it could be based on the Sigma 70–200mm f/2.8 design. While some similarities exist, there are also key differences. For instance, the position of the zoom and focus rings appears reversed compared to Sigma’s lens, suggesting OM System may have introduced substantial modifications.
Still, there are questions. The teaser image seems to indicate a starting focal length closer to 50mm, not 70mm. It’s possible that the picture represents an early prototype, since lens designs often evolve considerably before reaching the final production stage.
If the rumours prove accurate and the lens is indeed branded as PRO, we can expect the hallmarks of OM System’s professional glass: robust weather-sealing, excellent optical performance, and in-lens image stabilisation designed to work in harmony with OM System’s industry-leading IBIS. Such a combination would appeal to photographers who demand reliability in challenging conditions, whether on the sidelines of a football match, tracking birds in flight, or covering fast-moving events.
For Micro Four Thirds users, this release could fill a long-requested gap in the system, providing a fast, stabilised telephoto zoom with the reach and versatility to handle demanding professional work. Whether it ultimately launches as a 50–200mm or a 70–200mm, expectations are high—and the wait may soon be over.

I understand the financial advantage of outsourcing production. But the lens looks like a Sigma lens and, mechanically and in terms of design, has nothing to do with an Olympus lens. That’s a shame.
