Chasing the Light – Chasing the Aurora: From missed moment to mastery
It was supposed to be the night. The kind of night that lives in dreams and whispers through campfire conversations. The forecast had said “Kp5.” That magical number – the Kp Index – was glowing green on every app I owned. I grabbed my gear, pulled on my hiking shoes and went out into the arctic chill, heart thumping in anticipation. Everything told me the aurora was coming. Everything… but experience.
I waited. Hours passed. The wind chilly, the stars stared back in silence. No lights. No magic. Just the creeping realisation that I had made a mistake – one that every beginner makes. I had relied solely on the Kp Index. I did not understand the deeper science. I had not checked the Bz value. I did not know how to interpret substorms. And I had no idea that a northernly shift in the interplanetary magnetic field meant I had just missed the show – again.
That night was humbling, but it became the spark that lit a greater fire. That night was the first step toward Aurora – How to Prepare – Predict – Photograph, a book forged from frostbitten lessons and hard–earned insights. A book born from failure – but built for your success.

Understanding the Sky: Space Weather Science, Made Accessible
At the heart of the aurora is the sun – a dynamic, fiery giant, ever-changing ball of hot gas, charged particles and magnetic fields. These charged particles, hurled toward Earth in streams called the solar wind, interact with our magnetic field and atmosphere to create the dazzling displays we call the aurora.
But here is where many chasers go wrong: they assume the Kp Index is the holy grail. It is not! The Kp Index is just one small part of a much bigger puzzle. It tells you, after the fact, how geomagnetically active the solar wind impact has been. But if you are trying to anticipate where and when the aurora will strike, you need to go deeper.
Chasing the aurora is not luck – it is a craft. And like any craft, it starts with understanding. The aurora is not random. It is the visible song of invisible forces, a cosmic ballet triggered by the Sun’s volatile temperament. Solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and high–speed solar wind streams – all of them shape the aurora’s celestial dance. But unless you know how to interpret the signs, you are only guessing.

That is why we look to space weather satellites – our silent guardians stationed between the Earth and the Sun. Missions like DSCOVR, ACE, and SOHO carry instruments that continuously monitor solar wind conditions: speed, density, direction, and – most critically – the magnetic field embedded in the solar wind – the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF).
Two key parameters stand out: Bt and Bz. Bt tells us how strong the solar wind’s magnetic field is. Bz, however, reveals its orientation. When Bz points south and Bt is strong, Earth’s magnetic shield opens in places, letting charged particles stream in and ignite the aurora. Without knowing this, you are chasing shadows. With it, you are chasing light.
You will need to understand the role of substorms, and how interpreting their timing and direction, which can help you choose the right valley, fjord, or peak to catch the show. I demystify solar cycles, CMEs, interplanetary shocks, and how to interpret satellite data from ACE and DSCOVR.
Understanding this data – and how they evolve before, during, and after substorms – is essential to being in the right place at the right time. My book breaks this all down, with visual aids and plain language, so anyone – from beginners to advanced chasers – can learn to read the sky’s subtle warnings.
Strategy and Preparation: Your Aurora Blueprint
Chasing the aurora is not just about knowing the science. It is about using that science to build a strategy. The book helps you prepare like a true aurora hunter.
It starts with timing. When is the best season? What about the moon phase? How does the spring and autumn equinox enhance geomagnetic activity? You will find answers to all of these questions. I will teach you how to analyse short– and long–term auroral forecasts, how to plan your trip months in advance, and how to make last–minute decisions based on real–time solar data.
Then comes location. Whether you are photographing from Iceland, Lapland – Norway, Finland, Sweden, Canada or in the Southern Hemisphere – Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, geography matters. Geographic latitude, elevation, weather patterns, and even city light pollution play a vital role. I guide you through insights to help you position yourself for a night out chasing the aurora.
What makes this book unique is that it blends storytelling, hard science, and practical planning into one seamless guide. It helps you:
- Understand auroral forecasts beyond the Kp Index – We will dive extensively into the use of the Glendale App. A true game changer for aurora chasers.
- Analyse substorms and anticipate bursts
- Choose the best locations for your time and season
- Read satellite data and model predictions with confidence

I also show you how to prepare for the harsh environments that come with aurora chasing. That includes:
- Clothing strategies for sub–zero nights
- Managing batteries in cold weather
- Staying safe during aurora chases
- Dealing with changing conditions on the fly
- Managing your photography gear
Chasing the aurora can mean hours in sub–zero temperatures, and the last thing you want is to miss the perfect shot because your hands were too frozen and missed the show, or to adjust your camera settings.

Aurora Through the Lens: A Photographer’s Guide for Olympus and OM System Users
There is a unique joy in capturing the aurora. The slow swirl, the sudden burst, the quiet majesty – all painted across the stars. But photographing it is not as simple as pointing and shooting. Low light, fast movement, and challenging temperatures can make it a nightmare if you are unprepared. When Lady Aurora performs a magnificent show, you may be overwhelmed and forget to photograph the aurora, as you are in this moment of awe.
In Aurora – How to Prepare – Predict – Photograph, I provide a detailed, field-tested photography guide tailored specifically to Olympus and OM System cameras. You will get my proven camera settings for various auroral conditions. Whether it is a faint glow low on the horizon or a vibrant corona directly overhead, I walk you through ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and white balance configurations.

You will also learn how to scout and compose your shots using space weather data. Not just how to find the aurora, but how to capture it beautifully. With step–by–step workflows, camera diagrams, and quick-reference checklists, this book becomes your portable mentor. Learn more on focusing in the dark, reducing noise (using the characteristics of the mFT sensor), and how to use the Aurora Chasing Optimiser.
The Olympus and OM System gear offers particular advantages: weather-sealing, lightweight bodies, and features like Starry Sky AF, Live Time mode that allow stunning long(er) exposures to balance your image. I show you how to make the most of these tools in the field.

Above all, this is not just a guidebook – it is a call to adventure. A promise that you do not need to be a scientist to understand the aurora. You do not need to be a professional photographer to capture it. But you do need preparation. You do need insight. You do need to respect the chase.
That is what Aurora – How to Prepare – Predict – Photograph gives you.

In the end, chasing the aurora is a journey – one that rewards the prepared. My book is your companion. It helps you move from guesswork to precision, from disappointment to delight. You will learn how to avoid the pitfalls I once stumbled into. You will know why the Kp Index is not enough. And you will begin to speak the language of the skies.
So when the night whispers, and the first shimmer appears on the horizon, you will be ready. Not just to see it, but to understand it. To capture it. And to remember it forever.
Because the aurora does not wait. And now, you do not have to either.
Enjoy this Cosmic Journey,
Hendrik Anne Zwart

About the Author
Biography
I am Hendrik Anne Zwart, born in 1964 in the Netherlands, and my journey with photography began at the age of seven when I received my first camera. Since then, I have carried a camera with me daily, capturing the beauty of nature wherever I go. My fascination with the Northern Lights began in the early 1990s during a business trip, where I witnessed the aurora for the first time. That experience left a profound impact on me and sparked a lifelong passion and a deep fascination with the aurora.
It was not until digital cameras became widely available that I started pursuing aurora photography. Since 2016, I have been photographing the Northern Lights throughout Scandinavia, refining my techniques and deepening my understanding of this natural wonder. In 2019, I began guiding aurora workshops with Nordic Light Photo Tours, sharing my knowledge and passion with others who are eager to experience and capture the aurora.
Over the years, I have gathered an enormous amount of knowledge about the aurora and how to photograph it.
This book is the pinnacle of my extensive experience and passion. While there is plenty of information online, I noticed a significant gap: a comprehensive, step–by–step guide to preparing for an aurora adventure, predicting its appearance, and photographing it with success. My goal with this book is to bridge that gap, providing a clear, practical guide to make witnessing and capturing the aurora a rewarding and accessible experience for all.
The heart behind the Lens
I believe in what I do because I have seen the transformative power it has, not just in my own life, but in the lives of others as well. When you are passionate about something, it is not just a job or a hobby — it becomes a part of who you are. For me, that passion is capturing the world through photography.
I believe in the ability of a photograph to tell a story, to evoke emotions, and to connect people across time and space. It’s not just about the technical aspects of the craft; it is about the way an image can speak to someone, inspire them, or make them see the world differently. I have always been driven by the idea that we can find beauty and meaning in the everyday, and photography allows me to share that perspective.
I also believe in the importance of teaching and sharing what I have learned with others. Over the years, I have gathered so much knowledge and experience, and I feel a deep responsibility to pass that on. Whether it is guiding someone on how to capture the perfect shot or helping them understand the science behind the aurora, I am committed to empowering others to see the world through their own lens.
Believing in what I do is also about believing in the value of creativity, exploration, and expression. I have seen how photography can open doors to new experiences, how it can challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, and how it can bring people together. It’s this belief that keeps me going, that fuels my desire to continue learning, exploring, and creating.
Ultimately, I believe in what I do because it aligns with my values, my passion, and my purpose. It is more than just taking pictures – it is about capturing the essence of life, sharing that vision with others, and inspiring them to see the beauty in the world around them. It’s about making a difference, one frame at a time.

“My name is Hendrik Anne Zwart and I am a full-time professional landscape and time-lapse photographer focusing on Northern Europe, leading photo tours with an emphasis on the Nordic Light. Nordic Light is the most incredible light I have ever seen. It has generated in me a boundless passion which is a huge privilege to share with others.
I love to chase the light in all aspects, no matter what the weather conditions are. The light is beautiful under hard conditions, a gorgeous sunrise/sunset or late at night. When the light is there….we should be there.
At Nordic Light Photo Tours we embrace Mother Nature. We have specialised in photo tours in Northern Europe with a focus on the area within the Polar Circle. The Light conditions are so different from anywhere else. Therefore Nordic Light Photo Tours spend most of the time here. We find this place “Heaven on Earth”. Why?
In today’s society, we hardly find any locations where you can enjoy the quietness and peace we need to relax and remove the noise from the brain. We are in constant motion and our brain does not get enough rest in order to find the balance we need in life. Nordic Light Photo Tours is offering the photo tours to those, who want to chill out and find rest and peace in enjoying photographing stunning landscapes.”
