    Thanks for the useful and informative article. I wonder if you’ve tried the ” digital doubler?” Or have you found the loss in quality in images shot this way too great?

      I don’t use the doubler, its basically the same thing as cropping in post and I prefer to do it in post.

    “Russ was shooting with a 50MP Canon 5DS R and a 600mm f/4 lens. I’m fairly sure his cropped shots probably looked better than mine. ” Probably, but nothing to do with cropping. The effective angles of view of both lenses on their respective bodies should be identical, and both should fill the frame, but he has about 3.8 times more pixels (and they are bigger pixels) so, yes, it should be a cleaner image. However, he has spent 4(?) times your cost, has to lug 2 (?) times as many kilos, and can’t work without a huge tripod. I know which would, and do, choose!
